U.S. Plans to Deport Thousands of Syrians

ARK News.. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced that the Donald Trump administration will terminate the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for thousands of Syrian refugees living in the United States, citing the program’s continuation as "not in America’s interest."

Tricia McLaughlin, DHS spokesperson, stated: "Syria has been a breeding ground for terrorism and extremism for nearly two decades, and the current situation in Syria no longer prevents the repatriation of Syrian citizens."

She further emphasized: "Allowing Syrians to remain in our country is not in our national interest."

According to DHS statistics, approximately 6,000 Syrians reside in the U.S. under TPS. The Trump administration has granted them a 60-day window to return to their home country.

The department warned that any Syrian national remaining in the U.S. after this period may face detention and deportation.
Background on TPS

The TPS program was established by Congress in 1990 to provide temporary residency to individuals from countries affected by armed conflict, natural disasters, or other extraordinary conditions. While it offers temporary relief, it does not provide a path to permanent residency.

Syria was designated for TPS in 2012 due to the ongoing civil war, and the program was extended during Trump’s first term. The latest decision marks a sharp reversal in U.S. policy toward Syrian refugees.

Context and Implications

The move aligns with the Trump administration’s broader immigration restrictions and national security-driven policies.

Critics argue that Syria remains unsafe for returns, citing ongoing instability, humanitarian crises, and the risk of persecution.

Advocacy groups have condemned the decision, warning of potential human rights violations and family separations.
