Germany Considers Major Financial Incentives for Syrians Returning Voluntarily
ARK News.. A German proposal to grant Syrian refugees up to €8,000 in exchange for voluntarily returning to Syria has sparked debate within German political circles.
German magazine Focus reported on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, that the German Interior Ministry is considering increasing financial incentives offered to Syrian refugees willing to return to their homeland, to boost the number of voluntary departures.
The proposed amount could reach €8,000, compared to the €1,000 currently granted to those returning voluntarily.
The report noted that the proposals have faced clear criticism from the Green Party, which described the move as “unrealistic” and largely dismissive of the deteriorating situation in Syria.
Meanwhile, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) believes it is appropriate “to consider stronger financial incentives for voluntary returns to Syria.”
According to data from the Federal Employment Agency, around 317,000 Syrians living in Germany were employed as of September 2025, including more than 266,000 working in jobs subject to social security contributions.
More than 900,000 Syrians without German citizenship are currently living in Germany, with over 500,000 holding only temporary residence permits based on subsidiary protection or refugee recognition, according to data from the federal agency.
