Kurdish National Council Condemns Attacks on the Kurdistan Region, Calls for Protection of Civilians and Refugees
ARK News.. The Kurdish National Council (KNC) in Syria has condemned the attacks targeting the Kurdistan Region, describing them as a serious violation of international law.
In a statement issued on Saturday, July 18, 2026, the KNC called on the Iraqi federal government to put an end to the repeated attacks on the Kurdistan Region. It also urged the international community to take a firm stance to halt the assaults, ensure the protection of civilians and refugees, and hold those responsible accountable.
Statement by the General Secretariat of the Kurdish National Council in Syria
The General Secretariat of the Kurdish National Council in Syria said it is following with deep concern and strong condemnation the continued attacks and shelling targeting the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, particularly the border areas and camps hosting Kurdish refugees from East Kurdistan, by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and affiliated militias.
The statement described the attacks as a blatant violation of Iraq's sovereignty and international law, as well as a direct assault on civilians and refugees. It added that the attacks target a region that has served as a safe haven for tens of thousands of people fleeing repression in Iran, calling them a condemnable act and a grave breach of international law.
The KNC said the attacks further demonstrate what it described as the Iranian regime's continued policy of destabilizing the region and violating the sovereignty of neighboring countries. The Council expressed its full solidarity with the people of the Kurdistan Region, Kurdish refugees from East Kurdistan living in refugee camps, and the families of those killed and injured.
The statement called on the Iraqi federal government to fulfill its constitutional responsibility to protect Iraq's sovereignty and territory, end the repeated attacks, and guarantee the safety of civilians and refugee camps. It also appealed to the United Nations, the UN Security Council, the European Union, the League of Arab States, and all relevant international organizations to take a firm position to stop the attacks, protect civilians and refugees, and hold those responsible accountable, thereby contributing to regional security, stability, and respect for international law.
The statement concluded by paying tribute to those killed, wishing a speedy recovery to the wounded, and reaffirming full solidarity with the people of East Kurdistan and the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Qamishli 18 July 2026 General Secretariat of the Kurdish National Council in Syria
