EU Issues Updated Guidelines for Syrian Asylum Applications
ARK News.. One year after the fall of the Assad regime, the European Union has issued updated guidelines for asylum applications submitted by Syrian nationals, reflecting the country’s new circumstances.
The European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA) stated that opponents of Assad and those who evaded military service are no longer considered at risk of persecution.
However, the agency noted that other groups may still face potential danger in post-Assad Syria, including individuals associated with the former government and members of certain ethnic and religious communities, such as Alawites, Christians, and Druze.
The EUAA emphasized that its guidelines serve as a framework for the 27 EU member states, as well as Norway and Switzerland, aiming to ensure greater consistency across the 29 countries providing international protection.
The number of Syrians applying for asylum has dropped significantly, from over 16,000 in October 2024, prior to Assad’s fall, to 3,500 in September 2025.
These updated guidelines could impact the outcomes of approximately 110,000 pending Syrian asylum applications as of the end of September.
