IAEA Detects Uranium Traces in Syria Linked to 2007 Israeli Strike
ARK News.. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has reported finding traces of uranium at a site in eastern Syria while investigating a building destroyed during an Israeli airstrike in 2007, which the agency believes was an undeclared nuclear reactor.
According to Reuters, which reviewed the confidential IAEA document, the Assad regime had long claimed the site in eastern Deir ez-Zor was a conventional military facility. However, in 2011, the agency concluded the structure was “very likely” a covert reactor that Damascus should have declared.
The report said that, after renewed efforts last year, inspectors managed to collect environmental samples from three undisclosed locations “allegedly functionally related” to the Deir Ez-Zour site.
Analysis revealed a significant number of natural uranium particles at one of the three sites. The agency noted the uranium was of anthropogenic origin, meaning it had undergone chemical processing.
The report clarified that “natural” indicates the uranium was not enriched, and did not reach a definitive conclusion on the implications of these findings.
