UN Commission of Inquiry Expresses Solidarity with Families of Syria’s Disappeared
ARK News.. On the occasion of the International Day of the Disappeared, marked annually on August 30, the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria expressed solidarity with the families of victims of enforced disappearance.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, August 30, 2025, the Commission stated: “Protecting all persons from the risk of enforced disappearance is an obligation that rests with the authorities,” while reiterating the need for accountability for those responsible for such violations.
Syrian authorities have recently taken steps in this regard. On May 17, the Presidency issued a decree establishing the National Body for the Missing — an independent institution tasked with uncovering the fate of thousands of missing persons in Syria, providing justice and legal and humanitarian support to their families, documenting cases of the missing and forcibly disappeared, and creating a national database.
The UN Human Rights Council established the Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria on August 22, 2011, under Resolution S-17/1.
