ARK News.. Tobias Tunkel, Head of the Middle East and North Africa Division at the German Foreign Ministry, met with a delegation from the Syrian National Commission for Transitional Justice, led by its chairman Abdulbaset Abdullatif, during an official visit to Berlin.

According to Syria TV, the Commission participated—alongside Syrian civil society representatives—in a meeting organized by the German Foreign Ministry to discuss the trajectory of transitional justice in Syria and prospects for German cooperation and support.

The session was chaired by Katarina Arends, Director-General for International Order, the United Nations, and Arms Control, with the participation of Konrad Arndts von Straussenburg, Director of Human Rights and Global Health, and Stefan Schneck, Germany’s Special Envoy to Syria.

Arends reaffirmed Germany’s support for the Syrian people and emphasized the importance of sharing experiences in dealing with the past, stating, “We do not offer a ready-made model; instead, we share our experience so you can assess its relevance to Syria.”
She also referenced her visit to Syria, including what she described as a deeply moving tour of Sednaya Prison.

For his part, Abdulbaset Abdullatif presented an overview of the Commission’s structure, the ongoing national dialogue process inside Syria, and the international experiences the Commission has studied—ranging from a visit to Rwanda to engagements with officials responsible for transitional justice processes in Mexico and Argentina.
The delegation also held a meeting with Bernhard Kotsch, State Secretary at the German Foreign Ministry, who welcomed the Syrian representatives and reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to supporting Syria’s transitional phase and strengthening its transitional justice pathway.
