ARK News.. Amid circulating reports on social media suggesting that Iraqi authorities had granted temporary residency to dozens of former Syrian army officers and commanders, Iraq's Federal Ministry of Interior has denied issuing residency permits to members of the former Syrian military leadership.

Interior Ministry spokesperson, Brigadier General Muqdad Miri, clarified that Syrian officers and soldiers sought refuge in Iraq on December 7 and 8, 2024, following the entry of opposition forces into Damascus. Baghdad allowed their entry through the Al-Bukamal border crossing after disarming them.

In an official statement on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, Miri stated, "We categorically deny these reports and emphasize the importance of obtaining information solely from official sources to avoid misleading rumors."

The statement further confirmed that the Iraqi Ministry of Interior "has not taken any action to grant residency, for any reason, to former Syrian military officers or commanders, contrary to what some are attempting to portray."
