Discovery of Republican Guard Tunnel Network Beneath Mount Qasiyoun Overlooking Damascus
ARK News.. A French news report has revealed the existence of a network of tunnels connecting the Republican Guard's military complex to the presidential palace beneath the slopes of Mount Qasiyoun, which overlooks the Syrian capital, Damascus.
According to France Presse, a military official involved in operations that led opposition factions to briefly control parts of the area described the site as a vast military barracks originally affiliated with Basil al-Assad, the late brother of Bashar al-Assad. The official noted that the facility is massive and was accessed by factions after the fall of the regime in some areas.
The report indicates that the barracks contain extensive tunnels leading to the presidential palace located on an adjacent hill. Additionally, there are two fortified underground rooms equipped with large halls for the guards, communication devices, electricity, and ventilation systems, alongside areas designated for storing weapons.
The source also mentioned the presence of more rudimentary tunnels carved into the rock, used for storing ammunition.
The report highlighted that within this extensive complex, new recruits are trained in shooting, while tanks and artillery are stationed across the site.
Further away in the compound, a large number of empty barrels and explosives were found. The military official confirmed that the regime previously used these materials to bomb civilian areas in northern Syria.
