ARK News.. The Syrian Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums announced the registration of nine new heritage sites on the heritage list of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), marking the first such inclusion in 14 years.

According to a statement issued by the Directorate-General of Antiquities and Museums, the newly listed sites include Saladin Castle in Latakia, the Umayyad Mosque, Azem Palace, Maktab Anbar, and the Citadel of Damascus in the capital Damascus. The list also includes the Al-Omari Mosque in Daraa, the archaeological site of Apamea in Hama, the Endowment Library in Aleppo, and the archaeological site of al-Lajat in Daraa.

These sites are considered among the country’s most prominent architectural and archaeological landmarks, preserving successive layers of Syrian history and representing living features of civilizations and cultures that flourished on Syrian land across centuries, from the classical eras to the Islamic and Ottoman periods.

The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) was established in 1982 within the framework of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. Headquartered in the Moroccan capital Rabat, the organization operates in the fields of culture, education, and science, with a particular focus on protecting heritage and promoting civilizational dialogue among member states.
