The seventy-eighth anniversary of the declaration of the Republic of Kurdistan in Mahabad
ARK News… Today marks the 78th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Kurdistan in Mahabad, and although it was only 11 months old, it left a valuable legacy for subsequent generations, and the Kurds are still proud and celebrate that day, including the Kurdistan national anthem, “Ey Raqib,” the flag of Kurdistan, and the name of the Peshmerga.
On January 22, 1946 AD, with the participation of more than 20,000 people representing all segments in “Chawr Chira” Square, the Republic of Kurdistan was declared in Mahabad, headed by Qazi Muhammad.
Although the period of rule of the Republic of Kurdistan was short, regardless of political and construction work, it worked on the cultural and educational aspect as well. Educational curricula became in the Kurdish language, a printing press was brought to Mahabad, a newspaper and four magazines were issued, plays were held in the Kurdish language, and Radio Mahabad was also established.
The Kurdistan National Army was established, whose name was later changed to the Kurdistan Peshmerga, and it remains a sacred name for the Kurds to this day. “Ey Raqib” became the national anthem of the Republic, and the flag of Kurdistan was raised over government institutions in the Republic.
The Republic of Kurdistan established political and economic relations with the Soviet Union and the Republic of Azerbaijan. Kurdistan’s agricultural products were exported to the Soviet Union, and a tax system was imposed on imports to finance the government.
One of the brightest points in this history was the participation of the Barzani in the Republic of Kurdistan under the leadership of Sheikh Ahmed Barzani. The Peshmerga of Kurdistan was defending the republic under the leadership of Mullah Mustafa Barzani. The first martyr in the Republic of Kurdistan was from South Kurdistan. For this reason, after the fall of the Republic, Judge Muhammad handed over the sacred Kurdish flag to Mullah Mustafa Barzani.
Now, 78 years after the founding of the Republic of Kurdistan, the Republic is described as a bright page in the history of Kurdistan and an example of Kurdish solidarity and unity for the sake of liberation and independence.
