Kurdish National Council Welcomes Syria’s Removal from US List of State Sponsors of Terrorism

The Kurdish National Council in Syria (KNC) has welcomed the US decision to remove Syria from the list of state sponsors of terrorism, stressing the need to capitalize on the decision by accelerating efforts to build a democratic, decentralized state, uphold the rule of law, and guarantee the rights of the Kurdish people.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 25, the council also called for conditions to be created for the safe, dignified, and voluntary return of refugees and internally displaced people and for assistance to be provided to them, including those displaced from Sari Kaniye and Gire Spi.

The US Department of State issued a decision on August 24 removing Syria from the list of state sponsors of terrorism, a move that could ease economic restrictions imposed on the country, open broader prospects for economic recovery and reconstruction, and contribute to addressing various issues facing Syrian citizens. The Kurdish National Council in Syria welcomed the decision, describing it as an opportunity to strengthen international engagement and improve living and public service conditions.
The Council stressed that benefiting from the decision requires accelerating the establishment of a democratic and decentralized state, upholding the rule of law, and constitutionally guaranteeing the national rights of the Kurdish people and other Syrian communities on the basis of equality and national partnership.
The Council also stressed the need to create conditions for the safe, dignified, and voluntary return of refugees and displaced people and to provide them with assistance, including those displaced from Sari Kaniye and Gire Spi. It further called for continued efforts to combat terrorism and extremism and to build inclusive national institutions, contributing to stability and development across the country.
