Dozens killed and injured... 163 fires in northwestern Syria since the beginning of the year
ARK News… Fires in northwestern Syria since the beginning of the year have led to the death and injury of dozens, in addition to the burning of more than 200 tents.
The Syria Response Coordination Team said in a statement that the number of fires in camps for displaced people in northwestern Syria has risen to 163.
The fires led to the burning of 223 tents and the death of five civilians, including a woman and 3 children, in addition to recording about 24 injuries, including 8 women and 8 children.
According to the team, "The significant drop in temperature and the displaced people's reliance on primitive heating methods that are not suitable for use inside the camps and reliance on cooking stoves inside the tents increases the risk of the tents catching fire further."
The statement pointed out that "the use of fabric tents is one of the most prominent reasons for the spread of fires inside tents, and the lack of insulation, as the number of camps that lack the necessary insulation to prevent heat or fires is more than 98% of the camps."
The response coordinators repeated their appeal to the humanitarian organizations working in the region to work to improve the humanitarian situation of the displaced in the camps and to provide the necessary supplies to prevent the recurrence or spread of these fires, calling for the establishment of “fire points within the basic and major gatherings in the camps, which include personnel trained to deal with fires to avoid casualties.”
It stressed "the necessity of finding suitable housing places for the displaced that can withstand various conditions near city centers and residential complexes, until appropriate conditions are created for their return to their cities and villages, which is considered the complete solution to the issue of camps in northwestern Syria."
