Kurdistan Democratic Party Welcomes Resumption of Parliament’s Work and Election of New Leadership

Nov 04 2026

ARK News.. The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, welcomed the resumption of the Kurdistan Parliament’s work and the election of its new leadership, describing the move as “necessary, albeit long overdue,” to safeguard the Region’s constitutional status and end the legal vacuum.

In an official statement issued on Wednesday, KDP spokesperson Mahmoud Mohammed said the parliament had reconvened with a majority of its members present to complete its first session, electing the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and Secretary through a legal and democratic process. Mohammed congratulated the people of Kurdistan and the newly elected parliamentary leadership, wishing them success in carrying out their national responsibilities.

The spokesperson criticized what he described as the paralysis of the legislative institution over the past two years, saying: “This legitimate institution, which represents the voice and will of the people, remained paralyzed because of political decisions taken by the leaderships of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) and the New Generation Movement.”

The statement praised the majority of lawmakers who attended the session, saying that, out of a sense of national responsibility and respect for voters’ choices and their constitutional oath, they had enabled the democratic process to move forward, ended the legal vacuum, and prevented what it described as attempts by a political minority to impose its will.

Mohammed also disclosed that several lawmakers and their families had faced “widespread threats,” describing this as “a serious indicator and an explicit threat to democracy and the will of the people,” and as a mindset that does not serve the development of democratic life in Kurdistan.

The KDP concluded its statement by stressing that reactivating parliament “is not directed against any individual or political party.” It described parliament as the genuine umbrella for political and legal dialogue and a key factor in maintaining internal unity. The party called on other political blocs to adopt positive positions and join parliamentary work, stressing the need to share responsibility and protect the Region’s achievements during this sensitive period.
