Kurdistan Regional Government Completes Legal Procedures to Repatriate 33 Migrants Detained in Libya for Eight Months

ARK News.. The Ministry of Interior of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) announced that it has completed all legal and diplomatic procedures to repatriate 33 irregular migrants from the Kurdistan Region who had been detained in Libyan prisons for more than eight months, following direct instructions from KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani.

In an official statement, the KRG Ministry of Interior said that after receiving information that several citizens of the Kurdistan Region had lost contact with their families and were being detained in Libya, Prime Minister Masrour Barzani immediately instructed the Ministry of Interior and the Department of Foreign Relations to take all necessary measures and intensify contacts to determine their whereabouts and secure their release.

The ministry confirmed that all required procedures and documentation have now been completed, paving the way for the 33 migrants to return to the Kurdistan Region next week.

The Kurdistan Regional Government renewed its warning to young people and families about the dangers of taking irregular migration routes and falling victim to human traffickers.

It said the 33 migrants had endured extremely difficult humanitarian and health conditions during their detention, which lasted approximately eight months, placing their lives at serious risk.

The Ministry of Interior said that, through intensive diplomatic efforts, the Kurdistan Regional Government has so far succeeded in rescuing and repatriating 302 irregular migrants from several countries to the Kurdistan Region.

The latest case highlights the risks faced by migrants attempting to reach Europe through irregular routes, particularly their exposure to human trafficking networks, detention and life-threatening conditions.
