Nechirvan Barzani and Sergio Mattarella Discuss Latest Developments in the Middle East

ARK News.. Nechirvan Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region, was received on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, by Sergio Mattarella, President of the Italian Republic.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed ways to further develop the friendship ties between the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and Italy, reaffirming their shared desire to strengthen relations across various fields.

President Nechirvan Barzani renewed the Kurdistan Region and Iraq’s appreciation for Italy’s continued support, particularly in the political, humanitarian, and development sectors, and highly praised the military assistance provided by Italy to the Kurdistan Region and Iraq during the war against terrorism.

For his part, President Mattarella expressed his pleasure at the visit and reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to supporting the security, stability, and progress of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. He also reiterated Italy’s appreciation for the Kurdistan Region as a protector and homeland of coexistence among the region’s diverse communities.

The latest developments in the Middle East also formed a key part of the discussions, with both sides stressing the importance of preserving peace and stability.
