Syrian Government Introduces Kurdish Language into Curricula of All Public Schools
ARK News.. Syrian Minister of Education Mohammad Abdulrahman Turko announced that the Syrian government has issued an official decision to incorporate the Kurdish language into the curricula of public schools across the country, in accordance with Presidential Decree No. (13) of 2026.
In a press statement, the minister described the move as a “historic turning point” aimed at strengthening national unity and reinforcing respect for Syria’s cultural and societal diversity.
In an official statement, Turko stressed that the decision reaffirms Syria’s civilizational identity based on coexistence, saying: “Adopting the teaching of the Kurdish language is an advanced step toward consolidating the cultural rights of Kurdish citizens as an integral and inseparable part of the Syrian national fabric.”
He added that the measure reflects the Syrian state’s commitment to ensuring equal educational rights for all citizens without discrimination.
Regarding implementation mechanisms, the Ministry of Education clarified that it has immediately begun preparing the necessary executive instructions and regulatory frameworks to put the decision into effect.
The ministry noted that the educational process will adhere to academic standards and national pedagogical principles, while ensuring an appropriate balance among the languages included in the national curriculum.
This announcement follows the issuance of a presidential decree on Friday, January 16, 2026, which officially recognized a set of Kurdish rights, foremost among them the designation of the Kurdish language as a “national language.”
