First Kurdish-Language University to Open in Germany in 2026

May 09 2025

ARK News.. Germany is set to host the first Kurdish-language university in Europe, with its opening scheduled for 2026—a landmark development described as a historic step for Kurds living outside the geographical boundaries of Kurdistan. The initiative aims to establish a new academic model rooted in the Kurdish language on European soil.

According to a statement released by the project’s organizers, preparations are already underway. These include assembling specialized teams, securing the necessary budget, and developing a solid educational infrastructure. The university is expected to officially launch operations in 2026, pending completion of administrative and regulatory procedures.

Kurdish will be the primary language of instruction, offered in both of its main dialects—"Kurmancî” and Sorani—while German and English will serve as supporting languages. Initial academic programs will focus on Kurdish language and literature, social sciences, and engineering.

One of the long-term goals of the project is to develop a unified academic Kurdish language that bridges the Kurmancî and Sorani dialects, thereby contributing to the advancement of higher education in Kurdish beyond the homeland.

In this context, Dr. Younes Bahram, president of the German-Kurdish Forum (Deutsch-Kurdisches-Forum e.V.), emphasized that the initiative is not merely an academic endeavor but represents a significant cultural shift for the Kurdish community in Europe.
