After 40 Years: Syria Signs First World Bank Project to Rehabilitate Power Lines
ARK News.. Syria has signed the final document for a major project to rehabilitate electrical transmission lines in cooperation with the World Bank—marking the Bank’s first project in the country in nearly four decades.
According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), Syrian Minister of Finance Mohammad Yaser Barniya confirmed that the project is funded through a grant, not a loan, and will support the government’s efforts—particularly those of the Ministry of Energy—to improve electricity supply essential for sustaining the national economy.
The minister also revealed that additional projects with the World Bank are currently under preparation across various sectors. These future projects will likewise be funded through grants and are expected to be announced next year.
It is worth noting that last June, the Minister of Finance announced the World Bank’s approval of a $146 million grant to rehabilitate electricity transmission lines—representing the Bank’s first project in Syria in almost 40 years.
