Green Belt Project Launched in Erbil, Capital of the Kurdistan Region
ARK News.. Erbil Governor Omid Khoshnaw announced the official launch of the Green Belt Project in Erbil, the capital of the Kurdistan Region, following the direct instructions of Prime Minister Masrour Barzani. The initiative aims to expand green spaces, combat pollution, and improve the region’s climate.
The first phase of the project begins in the Bahrika area, covering 13,000 dunams of land, where millions of pistachio and olive trees will be planted. Upon completion, the project will include around seven million trees, making it one of the largest environmental initiatives in the region.
Designed as a strategic environmental project, the Green Belt aims to reduce dust levels, mitigate climate change, and enhance greenery across the capital.
Before implementation, several technical and research committees conducted field studies with the participation of local and international experts. A team of Greek agricultural engineers recently visited Erbil to test soil, water, and environmental conditions in order to determine the most suitable tree species for the area.
The Green Belt Project is part of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s broader environmental strategy, which focuses on protecting nature and improving air and water quality.
In recent years, the KRG has carried out several key environmental projects, including the “Ronaki” clean energy project, the shutdown of neighborhood diesel generators that caused significant pollution, and large-scale cleanup campaigns across Erbil.
According to Erbil’s master plan, the Green Belt Project is expected to increase the city’s green spaces by 25%, transforming Erbil into a cleaner, more sustainable city.
