Arab League Delegation Arrives in Damascus for Talks with Ahmad al-Shar'a
ARK News.. A delegation from the Arab League arrived in the Syrian capital, Damascus, to discuss the latest developments in the country and explore pathways for advancing the political process.
According to media sources, the Syrian administration's leader, Ahmad al-Shar'a, and Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani met with the delegation on Saturday, January 18. The delegation was led by Assistant Secretary-General Hossam Zaki, who also serves as the personal representative of the Arab League’s Secretary-General.
The visit marks a significant step in restoring Syria's relations with the Arab League after more than 13 years of suspension. Syria’s membership had been frozen due to the war waged by former president Bashar al-Assad's regime against the Syrian people.
During a joint press conference with the Arab League’s Assistant Secretary-General, Foreign Minister Shaibani expressed Syria's desire to "open a new chapter of cooperation and integration with our Arab brothers" and to reclaim its seat in the Arab League.
Shaibani also highlighted the administration’s efforts to hold a national conference that brings together all components of the Syrian people and to create a safe environment for the return of Syrian refugees.
For his part, Assistant Secretary-General Hussam Zaki emphasized Syria's central role in the region, stating, "What happens in Syria has a direct impact on Arab countries." He reaffirmed that Syria’s membership in the Arab League remains active following the lifting of its suspension in 2023.
