More than 1 billion people suffer from extreme poverty in the world

ARK News.. The United Nations Development Program and the Oxford Initiative on Poverty and Human Development warned that more than a billion people in the world suffer from extreme poverty, half of whom are minors.

The program and the initiative said in their annual report that "the poverty rate is three times higher in countries experiencing wars, while the number of armed conflicts recorded in 2023 was the highest since World War II."

The program and the Oxford Initiative, a research center since 2010, calculate the global multidimensional poverty index based on data from 112 countries inhabited by 6.3 billion people.

The index includes factors such as housing, sanitation, electricity, nutrition, and education systems.

In the same context, the UNDP's chief statistician, Yanchun Zhang, said that "the 2024 Poverty Index (covering 2023) paints a sobering picture: 1.1 billion people suffer from multidimensional poverty, including 455 million in conflict zones, with poverty rates three times higher in war-torn countries than in countries at peace."

The UN official added to France Press Agency that in countries experiencing conflict, "the deprivation suffered by their people is three to five times more severe because the struggle of the poor to secure their basic needs is much more difficult."

The 2023 Global Multidimensional Poverty Index, which covers 2022, showed that there are 1.1 billion poor people out of a total of 6.1 billion people living in 110 countries, according to the United Nations.

Extreme poverty continues to affect rural areas more than urban areas, with about 84% of the world's poor living in rural areas.

The number of the poorest people under the age of 18 is about 584 million children and adolescents in the world, and the percentage of poor children in the world is 27.9% compared to 13.5% among adults, according to the report. The majority of the poorest people, 83.2% of them, live in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, the Indian subcontinent, the most populous region in the world.
