Statement Issued by the Official Spokesperson of the Kurdistan Democratic Party

Jun 23 2026

ARK News.. The spokesperson for the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) held the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) responsible for wasting time and obstructing the formation of the tenth cabinet of the Kurdistan Regional Government, stating that the PUK is attempting to impose a "fait accompli" policy without regard for election results and seat distribution. He also stressed that the KDP, as the representative of the majority of the people, will not compromise on the rights and achievements of the people of Kurdistan.

The statement issued by the spokesperson of the Kurdistan Democratic Party reads as follows:

Dear Citizens,

Out of our sense of national and patriotic responsibility, and in order to prevent misinformation and reveal the facts for the historical record, we have found it necessary to respond to part of the statements and allegations made by the spokesperson of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan following his party’s leadership meeting on 21 June 2026. Our aim is to convey the facts to the resilient and struggling people of Kurdistan.

Following the sixth session elections of the Kurdistan Parliament, and while our party intensified its visits and negotiations to reactivate parliament and form the new cabinet, the Patriotic Union began wasting time in order to obstruct the election of the parliament’s presidency and prevent the formation of the tenth cabinet. This is because, deep down, they do not believe in the voting and electoral process. Therefore, they resorted to creating excuses, and it was clear that they were receiving support for such behavior and objectives. Moreover, the president of the PUK openly declared before the public that he was not in favor of forming legitimate institutions.

The spokesperson of the Patriotic Union should instead have referred to the number of votes and seats won by both the PUK and the KDP in the Kurdistan Parliament elections and the Iraqi Council of Representatives elections. Had he done so, it would have become clear how much popular representation we, in the KDP, possess and how much representation they have. Electoral entitlement is measured by the legitimacy granted by the people, not by slogans and falsehoods. The people of Kurdistan renewed their confidence in the KDP because they are convinced that it will protect their achievements.

The Patriotic Union, despite all the observations recorded against it, holds 23 parliamentary seats. The people of Kurdistan clearly know the reasons behind the disastrous "Lalazar" events and the imprisonment of the leading figure of the New Generation Movement. These events, along with a series of similar incidents, are apparently what the spokesperson of the PUK takes pride in, believing that the people of Kurdistan have forgotten such shameful actions. The people of Kurdistan are wiser and more discerning than to believe a collection of misleading words and phrases.

The Kurdistan Democratic Party, out of its responsibility toward its national and patriotic struggle and in the interest of the citizens of Kurdistan, as well as the protection of rights and achievements secured through years of sacrifice and struggle, has overlooked many of the previous and current positions of the Patriotic Union. However, we must correct them when they claim that the PUK does not compromise on the rights of the people of Kurdistan. The truth is that the Patriotic Union alone has violated the rights of the people and voters of Kurdistan and has become an obstacle to the democratic process and the reactivation of parliament.

The Patriotic Union represents only its own voters, whereas the party that truly represents the majority of the people of Kurdistan is the Kurdistan Democratic Party. This is the decision and confidence of the people. Therefore, the KDP will never compromise on the rights and will of the people of Kurdistan and will continue to protect those rights.

The Patriotic Union, through its spokesperson, speaks of "wings and factions." It would be better for the PUK to review itself before using such inappropriate terminology, because the KDP's restraint has limits. The nature of the KDP is one leader, one decision, and unity of ranks, and it will remain so in the face of challenges, conspiracies, and the schemes of those standing behind them. This is the reason for the KDP's success and the reason why the Patriotic Union has reached its current situation. History bears witness to this.

The only correct statement made by the spokesperson of the Patriotic Union was his remark that "the policy of imposing one's will harms the Kurdistan Region." Indeed, it is the Patriotic Union that seeks to impose itself on the election results by force, disregarding the voice and opinion of the people of Kurdistan and ignoring the votes and seats won by other political parties.

We in the Kurdistan Democratic Party take pride in all of Kurdistan and all Kurdistanis, and we are pleased to serve them. It is the Patriotic Union that has created discrimination and obstructs the implementation of laws, administrative and financial regulations, and the projects of the Kurdistan Regional Government throughout the Kurdistan Region.

We hope they will change these practices and stop holding an important and cherished part of our region hostage to the fulfillment of their objectives. We hope they will cease being a source of concern and instead place the unity of the region, its entity, and the rights, achievements, and stability of the people of Kurdistan above all else and refrain from pleasing the enemies and adversaries of our people any longer.
