Ismail Baghaei: “Mecca Agreement” Shows Security Through the U.S. Is No Longer Possible

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ismail Baghaei said that the Mecca Agreement reflects the region’s recognition that “achieving security through the United States is no longer possible,” calling on regional countries to strengthen relations, trust, and security without relying on external actors.
Speaking at his weekly press conference on Monday, August 10, 2026, Baghaei said Iran had no reason to consider the agreement signed by Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan as being directed against it, stressing the need to strengthen regional cooperation.
Baghaei called on neighboring countries not to allow their territories to be used as launching grounds for any attack against Iran, stressing that his country rejects “foreign interference in the region.”
In a separate context, the Iranian foreign minister said Iran could not accept “selective justice,” noting that his country had demonstrated to the international community that its participation in international treaties is based on its national interests.
He said the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic was linked to conditions on the ground and Iran’s demands, stressing that Tehran would not allow ships to pass through the strait as long as the war continues.
Baghaei noted that the ongoing negotiations with Oman over the Strait of Hormuz aim to determine a navigation route, describing the talks as “constructive and positive.”
He added that “it is natural to close the Strait of Hormuz to prevent it from being exploited in attacks against Iran,” explaining that “the reopening of the strait is linked to the circumstances and Iran’s conditions" and that as long as the war continues, his country “will not allow passage through the strait.”
