Kurdish National Council: Nechirvan Barzani's Visit to Damascus Is an Important Political Step

The Kurdish National Council (KNC) in Syria said on Tuesday, 4 August, that the visit of Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani to Damascus represents an important political step that will strengthen dialogue and mutual understanding between the two sides, develop relations between Syria and the Kurdistan Region, serve the interests of both peoples, enhance security and stability, support efforts to build a new Syria, and help end the suffering of the Syrian people.

The Kurdish National Council in Syria welcomes the historic visit by His Excellency Nechirvan Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, to the Syrian capital, Damascus, on 3 August 2026. This was the first visit of its kind since the fall of the former regime and was officially received by His Excellency President Ahmad al-Sharaa and senior government officials.

The Council expressed its deep appreciation for the warm welcome extended to President Nechirvan Barzani and his accompanying delegation at the People's Palace. It described the visit as an important political step that will strengthen dialogue and mutual understanding between the two sides, develop relations between Syria and the Kurdistan Region, serve the interests of both peoples, enhance security and stability, support efforts to build a new Syria, and help end the suffering of the Syrian people.

The Council stressed that the visit reflects the positive diplomatic role played by President Nechirvan Barzani in bridging differences and promoting stability at both the Iraqi and regional levels. It also described the visit as an opportunity to strengthen Kurdish-Arab relations, reinforce national partnership among all components of the Syrian people, and advance the national dialogue toward a lasting solution to the Kurdish issue within the framework of a united, democratic, and decentralized Syria that guarantees the national rights of the Kurdish people while safeguarding the rights of all Syrians.

The Council expressed hope that the visit would open new avenues for understanding and cooperation between Syria and the Kurdistan Region.
