Twenty-Five U.S. States Sue Trump Administration Over New Tariffs

ARK News.. Twenty-five U.S. states, including two led by Republican governors, have filed a lawsuit against the Donald Trump administration over its decision to impose tariffs on imports from 60 countries, arguing that the president exceeded his legal authority.

According to the France Press Agency (AFP), the states said in a court filing that "there is no logical connection between the alleged problem of forced labor in international supply chains and the sweeping global tariffs imposed by the Office of the United States Trade Representative."

A new package of U.S. tariffs took effect on Friday, targeting 60 trading partners and replacing an earlier set of global tariffs imposed by President Trump that had expired.

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer defended the measures, saying, "The United States has enforced a ban on imports produced with forced labor for nearly a century, and it is time for our trading partners to follow our lead."

The tariffs, ranging from 10% to 12.5%, affect major economies, including China, India, and the European Union, prompting protests from Beijing and other governments.

The Trump administration moved to rebuild its tariff regime after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a previous set of tariffs in February, limiting the administration's ability to impose broad tariffs without sufficient legal justification.

The administration based the new measures on Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, which authorizes the United States to investigate and respond to foreign trade practices deemed discriminatory, including through the imposition of tariffs.
