The UNHCR in Jordan reveals the number of Syrian refugees returning to Syria within three months

ARK News… The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Jordan said that 1,352 Syrian refugees returned to their country in the first three months of the current year 2024, noting that the cumulative number of refugees returns from 2016 until the end of last month reached 70,550 thousand refugees.

The UNHCR figures indicated that “there are 638,760 Syrian refugees registered with the UNHCR in Jordan, and that two thousands of them were resettled in a third country this year,” and stressed that “resettlement opportunities are limited and based on the quotas allocated by the resettlement countries.”

Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi had previously warned of the "significant decline" in international support for Syrian refugees, stressing during his meeting with the Secretary-General of the Danish Refugee Council, Charlotte Slent, that his country would not be able to fill the void in aid and services.

He considered that "the solution to the refugee issue is their return to their homeland, which requires greater efforts to resolve the Syrian crisis and create conditions that allow the voluntary return of refugees," and stressed that "Jordan will continue to make every possible effort and work with brothers and partners to reach a solution to the Syrian crisis that ends the suffering of the Syrian people and preserves Syria's unity, cohesion and sovereignty, ridding it of terrorism and providing conditions for the voluntary return of refugees."

There are about 1.3 million Syrians in Jordan, about half of whom are registered as “refugees” in the records of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, while 750,000 of them resided in the country before the outbreak of the Syrian revolution in 2011, by virtue of lineage, marriage, and commercial relations between the two countries.
