We are concerned about the Kurdistan Democratic Party's announcement of a boycott of the elections in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. We urge the Iraqi government and the Kurdistan Regional Government to ensure that the elections are free, fair, transparent and credible. All citizens of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq must have a voice in determining their future.

The Kurdistan Democratic Party said, after a meeting of its political bureau headed by President Masoud Barzani, on Monday, that since its founding, it has struggled to obtain the legitimate rights of the people of Kurdistan and to consolidate democracy, as two interrelated goals of the political system in Iraq so that the people of Kurdistan can achieve their legitimate rights.

The party's political office announced in a statement to internal Iraqi and international public opinion that, "Based on our understanding of our historical position and responsibility in preserving the legitimate rights of the people of Kurdistan and their democratic and federal system for Iraq, we believe that it is in the interest of our people and our country for our party not to comply with an unconstitutional decision and a regime imposed from outside the will of the people of Kurdistan, and its constitutional institutions, and not participating in an election that is conducted in violation of the law and the Constitution and under the umbrella of an imposed electoral system.”

In a joint statement, ten Christian political parties and entities confirmed that the decisive decision of the Kurdistan Democratic Party to boycott the Kurdistan Parliament elections “as the first and largest Kurdish popular and political force was a fateful step in order to protect the constitutional entity of the Kurdistan Region and preserve the democratic and constitutional foundations.”

The entities that signed the statement are (the Chaldean National Council Party, the Syriac Gathering Movement Party, the Administrative Committee of the Armenian Orthodox Community, the Shalama Movement for Christian Affairs, the Chaldean Democratic Union Party, the International Chaldean League, the Armenian Assembly, the Hammurabi Coalition - Iraq, the National Unity Alliance - Kurdistan Region, and the Chaldean Supreme Political Authority.
