The United Nations expresses its deep concern about the increasing humanitarian needs in Syria
ARK News… The Deputy United Nations Special Envoy to Syria expressed her deep concern about the growing humanitarian needs in Syria amid the economic crisis and limited UN funding.
Najat Rushdi, Deputy United Nations Special Envoy to Syria, said during a meeting in Geneva of the working group concerned with Syrian humanitarian affairs that the number of people in need in Syria had risen from 15.3 million to 16.7 million people, warning of a “worrying start” to this year in the country that is suffering from scourges. The war that the Syrian regime has been waging for years.
During the meeting, Rushdie made an urgent appeal for sustainable support for humanitarian operations and the provision of adequate funding, including early recovery.
She stressed the need to chart a new path, see tangible progress in the long-term challenges affecting Syrians, and work to alleviate the suffering of all Syrians.
Rushdi stressed the need to stop the escalation, enhance protection for civilians and civilian infrastructure, and adherence to international humanitarian law, in addition to “a stronger commitment from all parties concerned,” and to ensure that aid reaches all those in need.
