France: A political solution in Syria is inevitable

ARK News… The French ambassador to Syria confirmed that “after 13 years of conflict in Syria, and relatively stable front lines since 2020, the situation in Syria puts us before an impossible choice: either move towards normalization without initial concessions or think about the status quo.”

In an article published on the al-Majalla website, the French Ambassador to Syria, Brigitte Cormi, called for not forgetting the Syrian issue while the international community focuses its attention on other crises, stressing that “the current situation is not viable,” and that a political solution “is inevitable.” ".

Cormi said, "What happened on October 7 and the war that followed in Gaza shows how frozen crises can explode at any time, if the deep roots of the conflict are not addressed."

The French Ambassador to Syria stressed that, "For this reason, it has become more important than ever to remain alert regarding the Syrian crisis in order to reach a political solution to the conflict."

She pointed out that Bashar al-Assad remains the biggest obstacle to normalization, which was popular during the year 2023 in the context of the reintegration of Syria into the Arab League, and the attempt at rapprochement between Ankara and Damascus.

The French ambassador added, "The current situation is also not a viable solution, as the situation on the ground is highly unstable, and the living conditions of Syrians are getting worse."

Cormi revealed Syria's need to collectively chart a third path, and the situation on the ground and the balance of power between the parties clearly shows that there will be no military settlement to this conflict. Only a political solution will achieve lasting peace in Syria and allow Syrians to live in safety and dignity.

She added, "France remains fully alert to implement Security Council Resolution No. 2254, and it stands firmly on the European Union's position on normalization, lifting of sanctions, and reconstruction without a credible and comprehensive political process."

She stressed that France's participation in the Security Council and its support for the United Nations Special Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, continues, and France will continue its support for the Syrians, whether they are inside or outside Syria, and in the face of the current humanitarian situation throughout the country, international donors must maintain their funding. "..

In addition, Cormi said that France supports prominent figures in Syrian civil society, especially women and men who defend human rights and devote their lives to combating impunity, stressing that the fight against impunity in Syria is also a long-term French commitment.
