The United Nations warns of a new humanitarian crisis in northern Syria
ARK News… The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has expressed concern about the recent military escalation in northern Syria, warning of a new humanitarian crisis that will have dire consequences.
Adam Abdel Mawla, the United Nations Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Syria, and Muhannad Hadi, the Regional Humanitarian Coordinator for the Syrian Crisis, issued a joint statement regarding the renewed hostilities in northwestern Syria, in which they appealed to all parties to stop hostilities and spare civilians.
The statement stated that separate attacks targeted several locations in northern Syria, resulting in the death and injury of civilians, including women and children. It caused severe damage to vital civilian infrastructure in Aleppo, Idlib, Homs, Tal Tamr, Qamishlo, and Al-Hasakah.
He added that these deeply disturbing developments are a stark reminder that the crisis in Syria continues to devastate the civilian population and wreak havoc on civilian infrastructure.
Such incidents also disrupt humanitarian activities, with dire humanitarian consequences for people in need.
The statement called on all parties to ensure the protection of civilians and civilian objects - including homes and basic infrastructure - throughout their military operations in Syria in accordance with international humanitarian law and international human rights law.
He concluded by saying: We remind all parties that the Syrian people, regardless of where they live, have the right to live in a country that enjoys peace and security.
