The 14 round of Astana format consultations on Syria begins with bilateral meetings

ARK News: The fourteenth round of consultations of the so-called Astana format that seeks a solution to the conflict in Syria started in the Kazakh capital with a meeting of Russian and Iranian representatives, a Sputnik correspondent reported.

The spokesman for the Kazakh Chancellery, Aybek Smadiyarov, confirmed earlier that "all delegations have arrived in the capital of Kazakhstan," Nursultan.

During this day there will be a series of bilateral and multilateral meetings behind closed doors between representatives of the countries that guarantee the ceasefire in Syria (Russia, Turkey, and Iran), the parties to the conflict (Government and opposition) and the United Nations.

According to forecasts, the fourteenth round of consultations will focus on the work of the Syrian Constitutional Committee and the situation in the governorship of Idlib.

Russia's negotiating team is headed by President Vladimir Putin's special envoy for Syria, Alexnder Lavreyeiev, and also includes Vice Foreign Minister Sergey Vershinin.

The delegation of Turkey is chaired by the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Sedat Onal, and that of Iran, by Ali Asghar Khaji, senior advisor for political affairs of the Iranian Foreign Minister.

Damascus is represented by the Syrian ambassador to the United Nations, Bashar Jaafari, while the Syrian opposition, by Ahmed Tomah.

The UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pederson, as well as representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees will also attend this round of talks, as well as Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq participate in these negotiations as observers.

The solution of the crisis is sought in two platforms, that of Geneva, under the auspices of the UN, and that of Astana, co-sponsored by Russia, Turkey, and Iran.
