Al-Sharaa and Thomas Barrack Discuss Boosting Economic Cooperation Between Syria and the US

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa met with US Special Envoy to Syria Thomas Barrack on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2026, with Foreign Minister Assad Hassan al-Shaibani also in attendance, to discuss counterterrorism efforts and ways to enhance economic cooperation between Syria and the United States.
During the meeting, President al-Sharaa reaffirmed Syria’s core principles, emphasizing “the unity of Syria and its sovereignty over all its territories,” and stressed that the current phase requires prioritizing dialogue to build the country’s future with the participation of all Syrian communities.
The discussions also focused on countering terrorism and strengthening economic ties, reflecting a mutual interest in normalizing economic relations and supporting state stability in the aftermath of recent developments.
