Syria Seeks to Reactivate Frozen Accounts in Western Banks

Jul 08 2025

ARK News.. The Governor of the Central Bank of Syria has confirmed that the country is working to reactivate its frozen accounts in certain Western banks, as well as to enable direct access to the SWIFT financial system without intermediary service offices—a first for Syria.

According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), Central Bank Governor Abdel Qader Hasriyya said the former Syrian regime had created a class that benefited from sanctions by collecting commissions through brokerage offices or third parties, in addition to exploiting exchange-rate differentials.

Hasriyya also emphasized that global trade channels are now directly open to Syrians, which will positively impact citizens. He described the lifting of sanctions as the most important achievement following the country's liberation, noting that the sanctions had been among the harshest in the world.
