US Ends Temporary Protected Status for Syrians and Urges Them to Leave the Country

ARK News.. The United States’ decision to terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Syrians has taken effect, with those covered by the decision urged to arrange their status and leave the country unless they have another legal status allowing them to remain.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced on Saturday, August 15, 2026, that the termination of Syria’s Temporary Protected Status had taken effect, along with the termination of TPS for several other countries, including Haiti, Yemen, Afghanistan, and South Sudan.

The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services had previously announced the termination of Syria’s TPS designation effective July 27, while confirming that work permits issued under the program would also expire in accordance with the decision.

The decision took effect following legal proceedings that allowed President Donald Trump’s administration to proceed with ending TPS for Syrians after a federal court had previously blocked the decision.

The United States designated Syria for Temporary Protected Status in 2012 due to the armed conflict and unsafe conditions in the country.

The designation was subsequently extended and renewed several times. TPS provides beneficiaries with protection from deportation and work authorization for as long as the status remains in effect.

Previous official data indicated that thousands of Syrians had benefited from the program. Following its termination, beneficiaries face the need to regularize their status through other immigration or legal residency pathways or leave the United States.
