Kurdish-German University Set to Open Its Doors by the End of 2026
ARK News.. Dr. Younis Bahram, academic and project supervisor of the International Kurdish-German University, is leading an ambitious academic initiative poised to mark a major milestone in the advancement of Kurdish higher education in Europe. The university is being established in the heart of Dresden, eastern Germany.
Operating from his office in the city, Dr. Bahram confirms that the new institution—characterized by its dual Kurdish-German identity—is scheduled to welcome its first cohort of students by the end of 2026.
“This university is both Kurdish and German and will be officially recognized in Germany,” Dr. Younis Bahram said in a press statement. “We are planning to launch academic programs by late 2026.”
The Kurdish-German University will be the first of its kind in Germany, offering a range of academic disciplines including Kurdology, literature, and engineering. Courses will be taught in three languages: Kurdish (both Sorani and Kurmanji dialects), English, and German. The institution will build on academic partnerships with universities in the Kurdistan Region, including the University of Kurdistan – Erbil and Newroz University in Duhok.
Dr. Bahram emphasized the university’s inclusive approach to language instruction:
"Both Sorani and Kurmanji will be incorporated into the curriculum, and we are working to expand our collaboration with other Kurdish universities in the region."
The creation of this university responds to a growing need within the Kurdish diaspora in Germany. While the community has long established cultural and social organizations, there has been a noticeable absence of specialized academic institutions dedicated to preserving and promoting Kurdish language, identity, and scholarship in the diaspora.
