Statement by the Kurdistan Journalists Syndicate-Syria on the occasion of Kurdish Press Day

Apr 23 2024

ARK News… The Council of the Kurdistan Journalists Syndicate – Syria, on 22/4/2024, issued a statement on the occasion of the 126th anniversary of the founding of the newspaper (Kurdistan), in which it confirmed that the Democratic Union Party (PYD) adopted methods and treatment similar to those adopted by the Syrian regime in suppressing the media in general.

Below is the text of the statement:

Today 22/4/2024, marks a dear memory for all of our hearts, which is the 126th anniversary of the publication of “Kurdistan” newspaper, which was founded by Kurdish journalist Prince Miqdad Medhat Badirkhan. Its pioneers suffered a lot for the continued publication of “Kurdistan,” which remains a bright spot that Kurdish journalists, male and female, boast about at all times and places.

On this day, Kurdish journalists, male and female, all over the world express their appreciation and appreciation for the great role that Prince Badirkhan played in the world of journalism. He proved that the Kurds are no less important than other nations, and that they were the forerunners of many nations thanks to the tremendous efforts he made.

In Syria, journalists have faced great difficulties in their work since the Baath coup took power decades ago until now. The Syrian journalist who thinks outside the circle of the regime is still being subjected to continued restrictions and arrests, fighting against him in his strength and dignity, and threatening his life.

When the Democratic Union Party took over the administration of the Kurdish region in Syria, the party’s apparatus followed it with methods and treatment similar to those adopted by the regime in suppressing the media in general. Every journalist who disagreed with their opinions was subjected to organized violence, as some were arrested, their fingers were broken, and they were exiled outside the borders without any legal or humanitarian grounds.

On March 31, 2024, journalist Rakan al-Ahmed, correspondent for the “Nudem Rojava” agency, was kidnapped in the town of Girke Lage. On April 2, Ahmed Sofi, a journalist in the Kurdistan Democratic Party - Syria, was kidnapped, and the whereabouts of the two colleagues are still unknown, and their families are unable to visit them or know news about them, and this contradicts all human norms and values.

We, in the Council of the Kurdistan Journalists Syndicate-Syria, on this solemn occasion, congratulate ourselves and all Kurdish male and female journalists, and salute the soul of the deceased of the Kurdish press, Jiwan Mirani, the first head of the Kurdistan Journalists Syndicate-Syrian.
