Syrian Negotiations Commission Meets US Syria Envoy in Geneva

ARK News… The delegation representing the Syrian Negotiations Commission in the Constitutional Committee met with the US envoy to Syria, James Jeffrey, in Geneva ahead of the third round of talks by the drafting committee.

The delegation stressed the importance of the Constitutional Committee in the political process laid out in UN Security Council resolution 2254. They also stressed the need to make progress in the work of the Constitutional Committee to draft a new constitution fulfilling the aspirations of the Syrian people and as an essential step towards an inclusive political solution.

The delegation also underscored the importance of revitalizing the political process with its four baskets, including the creation of a safe, neutral environment for a political solution to be implemented in full.

The delegation highlighted the dire conditions the Syrian people are going through across the country, especially due to the coronavirus pandemic. It commended the efforts to ensure the implementation of Caesar Act sanctions and that they do not affect civilians and access to humanitarian and medical aid across Syria.

For his part, Jeffrey talked about the importance of the Constitutional Committee’s work within the full implementation of UN resolution 2254 and the completion of its mission as soon as possible as essential to alleviating the suffering of the Syrian people. He stressed the US support for the role of the United Nations in facilitating the Committee’s work and the political process in general.

Jeffrey reiterated the US’s commitment to working with the international community to push the peace process in Syria forward, stressing the importance of serious engagement by all Syrian parties so as to meet the aspirations of the Syrian people.

Jeffrey also reaffirmed the US’s support for a genuine political transition in Syria by the Syrian people.
