A statement from the Syrian feminist political movement about the attacks on activists of civil society

Feb 21 2019

ARK News: The civil activist Reem Al-Nasser in the city of Al-Raqqa was subjected to a violent attack by an armed group of de facto authorities in the city on February 14, 2019, a city whose inhabitants have faced all kinds of repression from the Assad regime and the de facto forces that still impose their authority on the city to this day. Al-Raqqa was one of the cities where civil society organizations have been active in the past few years.

We in the Syrian feminist political movement condemn these attacks on activists of civil society in Al-Raqqa and on all Syrian territory by the dominant forces, whose violations are no different from the repressive method followed by the Assad regime to end the peaceful civil movement by arrest, torture and intimidation to limit the continuation of peaceful civil activity, one of the most important pillars of strengthening the values of community and rights work, especially in light of the circumstances in which all Syrian regions are passing through where civic movement leaves its mark by mitigating the devastating effects of war by providing education, capacity-building, and community activities, especially for women and children.

The Syrian women's political movement finds in these practices against activists undermining the foundations of civil society, which seeks to replace the values of peace in a war-ravaged society, and we appeal to our people and all those who believe in the revolution of freedom and dignity to condemn these attacks, regardless of the identity of the perpetrators.

The Syrian Women’s political movement also calls upon the international community and the states that are active in the Syrian file and the guarantors and allies of the de facto forces to stand up for these violations and their responsibility of protecting civilians and to allow women activists to work freely in civilian areas of control and the need for impunity and accountability.

Mercy to the martyrs and freedom of the detainees and the disappeared and victory for our great people
