Masrour Barzani: The new authority in Syria is serious about resolving the Kurdish issue.

ARK News.. Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani affirmed Erbil’s support for talks and dialogue between Damascus and the Kurds in Syria, noting that relations between the Kurdistan Region and the Syrian government are developing positively.

In an interview with Al Jazeera published on Sunday, August 9, 2026, Masrour Barzani said, “It is clear that there are still problems,” but stressed that the Kurdistan Region had been “a strong supporter of the talks and dialogue between Damascus and the Kurds in Syria.”

He added that President Barzani had issued invitations in this regard and “played an active role in helping the talks and dialogue continue.”

Regarding relations between the Kurdistan Region and Syria, the prime minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government said there is “a good relationship that is developing between Erbil and Damascus,” stressing the Region’s support for “any positive and constructive initiative or step that would ultimately lead to ending and resolving the outstanding problems in Syria.”

Regarding granting Syrian citizenship to Kurds, Barzani said that the Syrian government had already taken a decision on the matter, adding: “We have seen that they are very serious about it so far.”

He noted that Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa had issued a directive to grant citizenship to Kurds, saying, “I do not know whether the procedures have been completed, but he made the decision.”
