U.S. Warns Citizens in Several Middle Eastern Countries Amid Rising Regional Tensions
ARK News.. The U.S. Department of State has issued a series of coordinated security alerts through its missions in Iraq, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Oman, and Lebanon, urging American citizens to exercise increased caution amid concerns over a rapid and unexpected escalation of tensions in the Middle East.
U.S. missions said on Sunday, September 20, 2026, that the security environment in the region “remains complex, with the possibility of unexpected escalation,” warning of potential flight cancellations, airspace closures, and disruptions to travel.
They also urged Americans in the region to check flight schedules directly with airlines and airports, monitor official alerts and local media, and follow instructions issued by local authorities.
In Iraq, the U.S. mission advised American citizens to monitor flight operations at Baghdad, Erbil, Basra, and Sulaymaniyah airports; avoid demonstrations, large gatherings, and areas with a heavy security presence; exercise caution around locations publicly associated with the United States; and maintain a low profile.
The U.S. Embassy in Amman advised Americans to avoid traveling to military bases in Jordan, comply with air-raid sirens and official warnings, and stay away from windows, glass doors, and falling debris in the event of an air attack.
The alerts also said that Iran-backed Houthi forces have carried out military operations against Saudi Arabia, including attacks affecting civilian airports, warning that the confrontation could escalate rapidly.
They further noted that U.S. diplomatic facilities in the Middle East and elsewhere have previously been targeted, warning that Iran or groups supporting it could target U.S. interests abroad, including companies and institutions linked to the United States.
While most of the alerts focused on increased caution, the U.S. mission in the UAE urged citizens outside the Middle East to “seriously reconsider” traveling to or transiting through the region.
Washington has not announced the closure of its diplomatic missions. U.S. embassies in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Lebanon, and Oman said they would continue providing routine or emergency consular services.
The warnings came hours after the Houthis announced attacks on what they described as “sensitive” sites in Riyadh using missiles and drones. Flames and a large plume of smoke were reportedly seen near King Khalid International Airport.
The Saudi-led coalition said its air defenses intercepted a missile launched toward Riyadh and thwarted attacks targeting Bisha, Farasan, Taif, and Yanbu, while the Houthis claimed to have attacked an Aramco facility in Yanbu.
Saudi authorities had earlier issued warnings of possible air attacks before announcing that the threat had ended.
