U.S. Imposes New Sanctions on Bashar al-Assad's Father-in-Law

Dec 11 2024

ARK News.. The United States has announced new sanctions targeting the father-in-law of Bashar al-Assad and former officials of Syria's Air Force Intelligence, accusing them of involvement in war crimes, including the torture of civilians and American nationals.

On Monday, December 9, 2024, the U.S. Treasury Department announced sanctions against Fawaz al-Akhras, Bashar al-Assad's father-in-law, citing his financial support for the Syrian regime and facilitating efforts to evade international sanctions imposed on it.

The Treasury Department noted that al-Akhras, who had been residing in the United Kingdom, is currently in Russia, where Assad and his family relocated following the regime's collapse. The sanctions were announced to coincide with International Human Rights Day.

This is not the first time the U.S. has targeted al-Akhras; sanctions were previously imposed on him in 2020 for his direct support of the Syrian regime.

These latest sanctions underscore Washington's continued efforts to hold individuals accountable for supporting a regime accused of extensive human rights abuses.
