According to Reuters, Pope Leo told the Spanish Parliament on Monday, June 8, 2026, during a week-long visit to Spain, that rising conflicts and growing political polarization are pushing the world toward a “deep spiritual and cultural crisis.”
The pontiff described plans to increase European military expenditure as “concerning,” stressing his opposition to further defense spending increases across the continent.
Pope Leo, the first American to ascend to the papacy, also urged the international community to provide greater assistance to migrants and displaced people around the world.
