Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism: 10 Bomb-Laden Drones Downed Over Erbil Amid Renewed U.S.-Iran Escalation

ARK News.. The Kurdistan Region’s Counter-Terrorism Directorate announced on Wednesday that coalition air defenses had intercepted and brought down 10 bomb-laden drones over Erbil and its surrounding areas, with no casualties reported.

In a statement issued on September 2, the directorate said the drones were intercepted and destroyed in the early hours of Wednesday as they were flying over Erbil. It confirmed that the incident caused no reported loss of life. The incident came amid a major escalation between the United States and Iran, with Tehran launching a series of missile and drone attacks against U.S. military positions and other targets across the region following a new wave of American strikes against Iranian military infrastructure.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said it had carried out a coordinated missile-and-drone attack against U.S. bases in Erbil. According to Iranian state media, the IRGC claimed that the strikes damaged a maintenance facility and warehouses and disrupted the control system of a U.S. surveillance aerostat. Iran also claimed that fuel storage facilities caught fire and that U.S. personnel were killed. Those Iranian claims have not been independently verified, while the Kurdistan Region’s Counter-Terrorism Directorate confirmed the interception of 10 explosive-laden drones over Erbil.

Separate reports indicated that Iranian drones targeted positions belonging to the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI) in the Kurdistan Region. A senior KDPI official said the attacks took place between approximately 2:00 and 2:42 a.m. Three drones reportedly entered the group’s camp and headquarters in Balissan, while other drones targeting the Jezhnikan camp were intercepted and destroyed before reaching their targets.

The latest attacks add to growing concerns in the Kurdistan Region that the renewed U.S.-Iran confrontation could increasingly expose Iraqi territory to military action.

The attacks on Erbil followed a significant new escalation between Washington and Tehran. The U.S. military said it had completed a new wave of strikes against Iranian military targets, including Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps air-defense systems, radar installations, maritime assets, mine-laying capabilities, and communications facilities.

Iran subsequently launched missile and drone attacks against U.S. military positions and interests in several countries, including Iraq, Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait.

Reuters described the latest exchange as one of the most intense episodes in the conflict since July.

The latest incident highlights the vulnerability of Erbil to the wider U.S.-Iran confrontation. U.S. military personnel and facilities in the Kurdistan Region have previously been targeted by Iranian missiles and drones, while Iranian Kurdish opposition groups based in the region have also repeatedly come under attack from Tehran. The Kurdistan Region has sought to avoid becoming a party to regional conflicts, but the presence of U.S. forces and Iranian Kurdish opposition groups on its territory has repeatedly made the region a target during periods of heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran. For now, the Kurdistan Region authorities have reported no casualties from Wednesday’s drone attack, while the full extent of damage to military facilities remains unclear.
