Syria’s Central Bank Governor Outlines Objectives Behind Issuing New Currency
ARK News.. The Governor of the Central Bank of Syria, Abdul Qadir Hasriyya, has revealed the goals behind the decision to remove zeros from the Syrian pound for the first time in decades.
Speaking to Al Qahera News Channel, Hasriya explained that the primary aim of the move is to simplify the monetary system by introducing a new currency for the first time in 70 years.
He stressed that the change affects only the nominal value and does not impact purchasing power, while also carrying political symbolism and socioeconomic significance.
“We currently have 14 billion coins and banknotes in circulation in the Syrian market. Public awareness campaigns will be launched to explain the details of the new currency and the applications of removing two zeros,” Hasriya said.
He further noted that specialized committees, in coordination with banks, are working to ensure proper implementation and to achieve the intended economic and social objectives.
