Nechirvan Barzani Says Efforts to Form New Kurdistan Region Government Continue

ARK News.. Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani said efforts to form the Region’s new government are continuing, noting that meetings and discussions between the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) are ongoing with the aim of reaching positive outcomes in the interests of all components of the Region.

Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, September 19, 2026, President Nechirvan Barzani said the ongoing political talks were taking place in a positive atmosphere. He expressed hope that meetings between senior officials would result in comprehensive agreements that meet the aspirations of the people of the Kurdistan Region and strengthen political stability.

Barzani also stressed the need for Baghdad to take the Kurdistan Region’s share into account in the draft federal budget law.

He called on the Iraqi government to engage in serious and direct negotiations, in coordination with the Kurdistan Region, to resolve the issue.

Barzani noted that the launch of technical committees between the two sides was an initial step but said it was not sufficient.

“The basis should be to clearly and fully establish the Kurdistan Region’s financial share in the provisions of the federal budget law in order to secure the rights of those entitled to them and ensure economic stability,” Barzani said.
