ARK News: The UN envoy to Syria, Geir Pederson, confirmed on Wednesday that the Constitutional Committee includes representatives from all strata of Syrian society, noting that it will be held on October 30 in Geneva.

At a press conference held at United Nations Headquarters in Geneva, Pederson considered that “the meeting of the 150 members of the Constitutional Commission, consisting of 50 members of the regime, 50 from the opposition and 50 from civil society, is a unique opportunity for Syrians to unanimously work on a new constitution, pointing out that this is in the interest and aspirations of the Syrian people, and send a very strong message to the Syrians if it entails confidence-building measures and solid steps on the ground”.

He said: "We tried to make sure that all sides of Syrian society are represented in the Constitutional Committee, including ethnic, religious, gathering, and different political orientations, without the interference of politicians.

Pederson stressed that the constitution will help build confidence, and may represent a path to the political process.

He added: "We are discussing the duration of the meeting of the Constitutional Committee on 30 October ... ... For the meeting, which will include members of the 150th, it will not take weeks, as for the thumbnail of the committee, which includes 45 members, the matter requires its longer duration. "
He stressed that besides launching the political process in Syria, the UN is working to achieve a local ceasefire, which may help stabilize in Idlib and the northeast.
