Death Toll in Ceuta Migrant Crisis Rises to More Than 65, Spain Says
ARK News.. Spain's Interior Minister announced that the death toll from the migrant crisis in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta has risen to 67, blaming human smuggling networks for the tragedy.
According to remarks carried by local media, Fernando Grande-Marlaska described the events in Ceuta as "an unacceptable attack on Spain's sovereignty," stressing that individuals who entered the city irregularly "will never be granted legal status."
The minister added that Spanish authorities have succeeded in bringing the situation under control, noting that conditions in Ceuta have "largely returned to normal," while security and humanitarian measures remain in place to address the aftermath of the crisis.
Media reports on Friday said that around 49,000 migrants crossed by land and sea from Morocco into Ceuta. Earlier reports indicated that 15 migrants had drowned, before Spanish authorities later confirmed that the overall death toll had climbed to 67.
