Kurdistan Journalists Union -Syria Demands PYD to Immediately Release Detainees

Apr 15 2024

ARK News… In a statement, Kurdistan Journalists Union -Syria condemned the ongoing abduction of journalists by PYD militants in Syrian Kurdistan, demanding their immediate release and an end to the policy of silencing voices and tightening the noose, which is driving people to emigrate.

ARK received a copy of the statement which stated:

"The authority of the Democratic Union Party continues to engage in the abduction of journalists and obstructing their work, disregarding all human and professional norms and laws. Our colleague Rakan a-Ahmed, a correspondent for the 'Nudem Rojava' agency, was abducted on March 31, 2024, in the town of Girke Lage by an armed group affiliated with them, violating all values and principles during the Ramadan iftar in front of his children and family.

"On April 2 of this month, the same authority abducted journalist Ahmed Sofi of the Kurdistan Democratic Party - Syria in the same manner, and the whereabouts of both colleagues have become unknown due to the secretive places controlled by that authority without any accountability, and the fear for their fate is confirmed amid ongoing abductions. Militants of the Democratic Union Party abducted youth activist Marwan Hussein Liyani from Girke Lage on April 1 of this month, as well as Hassam Dorsin, a member of the Area committee of the Kurdistan People Party - Syria in Derik on April 1 of this month as well.

"We, in the Kurdistan Journalists Union -Syria Council, condemn and denounce these abductions and grave violations against Kurdish journalists and activists in Western Kurdistan by the authority of the Democratic Union Party, which persists in committing these violations despite appeals from international journalistic organizations and unions to stop and prevent them, but to no avail. We demand their immediate release and an end to the policy of silencing voices and tightening the noose, which is driving people to emigrate."
