ARK News... The Chargé d'Affaires of the United States Mission to the United Nations, Ambassador Jeffrey De Laurentiis, said that the Syrian regime seems content with procrastinating the political process, is seeking better offers and concessions from the international community, and is not proposing anything to build confidence and prove its willingness to work for peace and stability.

In remarks at the UN Security Council session on the political and humanitarian situation in Syria, Ambassador De Laurentiis explained that the Assad regime did not seriously seek peace during the years of war, but rather committed atrocities, some of which amounted to war crimes and crimes against humanity, and hid behind its sponsors, Russia. and Iran.

He added that the Assad regime's refusal to participate in the meetings of the Constitutional Committee over the past eight months, and after nine rounds of meetings it attended, but in bad faith, is a clear reflection of Assad's belief that he can fight the Syrian people or starve them into submission.

Ambassador De Laurentiis indicated that the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, sought diligently to find any way to advance the stalled political process through his broad participation with all parties in his step-by-step initiative, stressing that the United States supports this effort, and requires our participation. Full of the Syrian regime to do the same in good faith.

The US diplomat stressed that Assad must re-engage constructively in the Syrian-led political process facilitated by the United Nations in accordance with Security Council Resolution 2254, which is the only viable path to a lasting political solution to the conflict.
